A small flower basket with a large bulbous body and elaborate handles. Constructed in various weaving and plaiting techniques, the entire surface has been coated in black lacquer with the high points polished giving a pleasing contrast between matte and polished areas.
The basket has a metal hook to the back, which would allow it to be hung from a wall, as well as feet for standing on a surface. The basket comes complete with original water pot, cloth to wrap and tomobako.
The basket is unsigned.
Signed Wada Rinshi to the Tomobako.
A very similar basket using the same style of weave and the distinct lacquering method by Wada Rinshi is published in "Baskets, Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art 1850 -2015" number 187. Dated 1920-1940. The work is signed using a different style signiture to our example and it could be that Wada Rinshi had a pupil who inherited his name, or his signature changed over time and our basket is from a later part of his career.
1960–1980
