A lacquered pipecase depicting what I believe to be the Oni no Nenbutsu. The body of the case in black lacquer and the Oni carved into the surface decorated in various shades of lacquer.  

The reason for my hesitation is that the Oni is dressed as a Buddhist priest with his list of donors flapping from its belt, there's no drum visible, but it is alluded to with the striker tucked into his belt on the opposite side to the donors list.

However, I have not come across a painting, netsuke, or lacquer work depicting Oni no Nembutsu cowering from a lightning storm. Perhaps this symbolises the internal struggle and suffering on the path to redemption. This interpretation possibly offering an unusual twist on traditional imagery...
