A very fine bamboo brush case. A courtier plays kemari his foot raised having just kicked the ball into the air, he looks up in its direction. Two points worth commenting on: the quality of the raw material – the bamboo is of very high quality with a beautiful tight pattern at the top and bottom of the case; also, the details are finely carved into the surface of the bamboo, especially the details that adorn the courtier’s clothes. The top and bottom of the case are plugged with ebony wood, the himotoshi is inlaid in ivory and the courtier’s eyes are inlaid in dark horn.

This has previously been sold as a pipe case, however due to its length this would have been impractical – it is actually a brush case.
