A good-sized wood netsuke depicting Futen sporting a somewhat Elvis-style hairdo along with wild facial hair! The carver going for a windswept look with Futen’s hair lifting and his beard going in all directions.
The god of wind’s muscular body sits atop a cloud with his large bag. His hands grip the opening as a gust of wind flies out.
I love everything about this netsuke. It has humour, a rugged boldness to the carving and is a great size. All topped off with a lovely deep patina to the surface of the wood.
The himotoshi is formed by an opening between the bag and the body.
