An ivory netsuke depicting a spider sat on its web atop a broken roof tile with scattered leaves. The end of the roof tile is interestingly decorated with the Tokugawa mon. The combination of the broken tile and spider’s web could be a political message. Signalling the decline of the long reign of the Tokugawa, this netsuke was designed to be worn very discreetly to show displeasure with the current system.
