A TSU school wooden netsuke depicting a rat catcher, a common and often humorous theme within netsuke. Our version has a face full of character but as is often the case, he appears to have been outwitted by his foe. The rat catchers body is almost completely covered by his straw rain coat, the handle of his club pokes out from under his coat.
This darkly stained netsuke has developed a lovely patina with time.
