A wood and lacquered mask depicting the mask of Shishi-guchi. Shishi-guchi meaning ‘lion's mouth’. The Shishi-guchi mask is used for the lion spirit in Scene II of Shakkyo, the play from which all Kabuki lion dances are derived.
The mask’s surface has been covered with several layers of black, red and small flecks of gold lacquer, which has then been rubbed down for effect.
Signed to the rear in lacquer. The signature has worn and is unreadable.
