A fine ivory netsuke of a seated rat, its tail neatly wrapped around his body, held in with its front paws. Lowering its head and turned to one side, he lifts a hind leg to scratch his ear. The rat’s large eyes are inlaid with dark horn and the area around the eyes raised and polished to form delicate eyelids. His body is covered in carefully incised hairwork, and the himotoshi is formed by one larger and one smaller hole to the base.
