A well worked netsuke in boxwood with inlay depicting hotei. The face, hands and tassel that hangs down from the fan and ruches of material where the sack is tied at the top are all brilliantly carved. Lots of open work and undercutting around the main areas give the netsuke a nice depth. The surface of the sack is inlaid in shell of various colours. The himotoshi is formed by two equal holes to the base.
Signed, Fusai or Kureya. The signature has not been easy to translate, I’ve got two possible readings but haven’t found any other works that match this style, so my reading is possibly incorrect.
Late 19th century
Height: 3.2cm
