Charming Netsuke depicting a seated farmer sharpening his sickle. He appears very content, smoking his pipe with a gentle smile on his face.
On his belt is attached a Netsuke supporting a tobacco pouch, with an inscription that reads “beware of fire”. The risks from fire in Japan were great and terrible blazes are well documented. Our farmer would have served both as a functional Netsuke and reminder to his owner of the dangers of fire from smoking. It is reminiscent of the health warnings we see on modern cigarette packages
Unsigned, dating to the 19th Century Meiji period.
Size: 3.5cm
