Netsuke - Kyoto School Shishi

A powerful, unsigned Kyoto School Shishi with a typically fierce Mitsuharu expression. Seated with its head turned back to the right and its open mouth containing a loose ball, three paws closely guard the larger ball. Dating to the late 18th or early 19th century this fantastic netsuke has strong curls and fine ink stained hair work running down his body.

A pipe Himotoshi runs from one side of the body down to the base. The side with the Himotoshi is well worn and has formed a warm mellow patina.

This model is often automatically attributed to Mitsuharu, I believe our chap is more likely by a follower.

Size: 5cm
