Kagamibuta-style Netsuke – Rain Dragon and Auspicious Items

Sold

A kagamibuta-style netsuke. Unusually, both the bowl and plate in stag with extensive open work. A rain dragon (ama-ryu) twists its way around a tablet that also includes a Buddhist fly whisk (hosssu), reishi fungi, and daffodil (suisen). The table in the centre is signed “Fusai”, a netsuke carver from Asakusa. To the verso, a flower with five petals sits within the centre of a pentagon.

A very fine patina, the surface of the bowl has developed a beautiful colour and interesting texture.

Signed to the front – Fusai

Circa 1860

Width – 4cm

Depth – 1.7cm
