A fine 4-case inro depicting a pair of mandarin ducks. Black roiro ground with a togidashi-e river and densely applied gold hirame for the sky. The rocks and birds are rendered brilliantly in Takamaki-e with detail of the female bird highlighted with gold foil and each individual barb of a wing picked out.
A pair of mandarin ducks is often encountered in Japanese art; the underlying message is one of love and happy marriage.
