A fine 4-case inro depicting a pair of mandarin ducks. Black roiro ground with a togidashi river and densely applied gold hirame for the sky. The rocks and birds are rendered brilliantly in Takamaki with detail of the female bird highlighted with gold foil and each individual barb of a wing picked out.
A pair of mandarin ducks is often encountered in Japanese art; the underlying message is one of love and happy marriage.
