A bamboo sagemono. The legend of the Tongue-Cut Sparrow is depicted across both sides. On the back, the moment the mean old lady opens the large box, believing it to be treasure, only to be confronted with a terrifying Yokai as she recoils in terror.
On the front, a pair of sparrows fly toward a large bowl. Above, there are two Kanji.

The Legend of the Tongue-Cut Sparrow (舌切り雀, Shitakiri Suzume) is a famous Japanese folktale. Here is a summary of the story:
Once upon a time, there lived an old man and his greedy, mean-spirited wife. One day, the old man found an injured sparrow and decided to take it home to nurse it back to health. The sparrow became his beloved pet, but the old woman despised it.
One day, while the old man was away, the sparrow ate some of the starch paste the old woman had prepared. Enraged, the old woman cut the sparrow's tongue and sent it flying back into the forest. When the old man returned and found out what had happened, he was heartbroken and decided to go into the forest to find his sparrow friend.
After searching, he found the sparrow's home and was warmly welcomed by the sparrow and its family. They offered him a choice between a large basket and a small basket as a gift. Being humble, the old man chose the small basket. When he returned home and opened it, he found it filled with treasures.
Seeing this, the greedy old woman decided she wanted even more treasure. She went to the sparrow's home and demanded the large basket. However, when she opened it, it was filled with dangerous creatures that attacked her, punishing her for her greed.
The story ends with the old man living happily, grateful for his small basket of treasures, and appreciating the kindness and friendship of the sparrow.
The tale is a moral story that teaches the values of kindness, humility, and the consequences of greed.
