A tall stag antler netsuke of Ikkaku Sennin carrying the Lady of Benares. The use of material is clever, with a branch point of the antler forming the lady, creating a deeper, more interesting composition. Ikkaku stands straight wearing clothes made of mugwort; his hands wrap around his back to support the Lady of Benares upon his back. The lady’s hair falls into nicely carved curls around her shoulders. The surface of the antler has a lovely yellow tone and the channel is plugged at the top and bottom of Ikkaku.
The himotoshi is formed by one smaller hole between Ikkaku and the Lady of Benares and the larger hole exits through Ikkaku’s sleeve.
