A remarkable wooden tonkotsu in the form of a pouch that skilfully emulates the texture of leather by Sukenaga. The focal point, a lone dragon emerging from swirling clouds, evoking the style of the Kano school of painters. The dragon, depicted across all sides of the pouch, imparts a sense of movement, as if it might leap forth at any moment to embark on an otherworldly journey.
At the forefront, a sizable tama radiates light in every direction. The attention to detail extends to the trim, where a hundred plus meticulously carved stitches adorn the edges, each one impeccably rendered.
The clasp, carved from rich dark wood, features a tama cradled within the claw of a dragon. The himotoshi, encircled by dark wood, allows for the passage of a cord to secure the pouch.
A comparable work by Sukenaga, showcasing a ho-ho bird, was published in "HIDA NETSUKE Wood Carving by SUKENAGA and Other Hida Masters" by Sagemonya in 2014. Another is held in the collection of the MET.
Signed: Sukenaga (Hida) 19th Century
