A wide bodied two-case inro. A large mantis rears up on its hind legs and prepares to strike an unsuspecting insect. The mantis is entirely inlaid in pewter, except for the underbody, which appears to be inlaid in semi-translucent shell. The insect, decorated in gold foil and perched on a leaf, is inlaid in aogai.
To the verso, various other insects inlaid with horn, shell and decorated with gold foil are living within a large plant formed nearly entirely of aogai. The design is set against a gold ground.
