A stag antler ryusa netsuke. A grasshopper sits amongst flowers at night. The dark porous section of the antler is cleverly used to highlight the night scene; grasses sweep across the top of the netsuke and onto the verso where they encircle the bar of the himotoshi, forming a symmetrical composition.
In the early 1880s, Zeshin created several paintings depicting similar scenes to this netsuke.
