Pipe case – Hannya Shingyo Sutra

Price on request.

A pipe case that brings together a combination of exceptional workmanship and material selection. The base for the creation is a wonderful section of tubular bamboo which, when viewed from the top and bottom, reveals the beautiful grain of the bamboo. I’m especially fond of the transition between the light yellow of the surface and into the deep orange around the collar.

The subject appears to depict three priests partaking in a tea ceremony; one holds a fly whisk while another looks to be holding a hishaku ladle and the other, presumably the most senior of the three, looks on, supervising the proceedings with a very serious expression. The three priests are carved in teppitsubori, also known as ‘Iron Brush carving’, a technique of carving to look like a painting.

Above the priests is a perfectly inked transcription of the Hannya Shingyo Sutra (Heaart Sutra), written in tiny kanji with each character measuring only a few millimeters in height.

Signed, “Kōzan dōjin koku” with seal Kōzan (Dōjin literally means a man of Tao)

Circa 1900.

21cm long

2.6cm wide
