A small two-part manju-style netsuke, the body formed of wood which has been coated in clear lacquer and polished to enhance the grain of the wood. The surface is decorated in gold, silver and brown lacquer with embellishments of shell kirikane.
The back bears the Zeshin signature but, although the style is of the school, the final execution falls someway below what we would expect from a genuine work by Zeshin or one of his direct pupils.
However, it remains a very nice little netsuke and I’m particularly fond of the wood grain. It would just be that little bit nicer if it were unsigned.
Inscribed – Zeshin
