A study of a snail crawling over a rotten cucumber/gourd. The long vegetable’s skin is embellished with large ukibori pimples to the recesses. In the middle, the vegetable has two areas that have rotted away to leave hollowed out areas, the larger hollow connected to the small himotoshi hole on the back of the netsuke, designed to conceal the knot of a cord. The small snail features a dense application of ukibori that completely covers the skin; the lines of the snail’s shell appear to be formed in ukibori.
Early 19th century
