Netsuke - Sleeping Temple Servant (Eri)

Late 18th or early 19th Century Netsuke depicting a sleeping temple servant (Eri)

A very content sleeping servant looks like he’s enjoying a well-earned rest. Snuggled up against his umbrella that’s been packed away inside its protective cover.

Our sleeping servant is wearing an Eboshi with strands of fine hair protruding from under it. The Eboshi has been delicately stippled then inked for effect. A lovely Netsuke that’s further enhanced buy the material, it’s developed a lovely deep patina and the changing colour of the Marine Ivory especial around the servant’s face adds both depth and character.

The Himotoshi is constructed of one smaller and one larger oval hole, this is both an attractive and functional Netsuke.

Size: 6.2cm
