A Sarumawashi (monkey trainer) and his monkey in stag antler.
A monkey trainer would train his monkey to perform tricks entertaining townsfolk as they went about their business. Our trainer stands, bent forward slightly with his monkey perched on his shoulder. In one hand he holds a rope that connects to the monkey’s harness and in the other a training cane. The himotoshi is formed by two equal holes one above the other.
