This ivory netsuke shows the two animals fighting. The monkey is trapped in the octopus’ tentacles and is struggling to break free. The monkey grabs a chunk of the octopus’s leathery skin. The octopus’ inlaid eyes are bulging, its nose is pulled up. The tentacles clutching the monkey make this a compact and excellently crafted composition. The monkey’s fur is very densely carved and coloured dark brown, creating a fine contrast between the two foes, as the octopus is very smooth, with a yellowish patina. The typical signature is found on the underside. Several natural openings serve as himotoshi.
