A contemporary netsuke by the talented artist Adam Bland. I've keenly watched the creation of this netsuke from a block of pale boxwood with limitless possibilities, gradually finding its form. Stood with his head bowed and looking back over its shoulder holding a large branch in its mouth, he appears to be looking back at his beloved master but with an air of playful disobedience.
Every aspect of this netsuke has been treated with delicacy, from the detailed bark on the dog’s stick to the fine hairwork reminiscent of the Nagoya carvers of old. Adam feels safe working in small scale, his works often around 3cm tall – the size of the dog is nearly twice that and demonstrates his growing confidence as an artist. This creation took six months of hard work and often painful contemplation to complete. But the end result is a tour de force and a work that I believe will stand Adam alongside the other great names of modern-day netsuke carving in the west.
