Netsuke – Kiyohime, Anchin and the bell of Dojoji

A brilliant 18th-century netsuke depicting Kiyohime. Having transformed from a beauty into a half witch, half dragon creature, she winds her serpent-like body around the bell of Dojoji. Gripping her hair, violently tugging at it, with mouth agape, she screams in rage. Clearly, her physical change is complete.

In this early example her face really tells the tale of the psychotic breakdown she experiences when Anchin rejects her advances. Talking of Anchin, the poor fellow is visible in an opening of the bell, he is offering a hand, begging her for his life. As we all know, to no avail.
