By Shoko, depicting Daikoku the god of wealth and good fortune. Daikoku is seated, resting on his wish granting mallet and bag of treasure. Made from wood with dark horn inlaid eyes.
The lucky gods were a favourite subject of Shoko with several illustrated in MCI with line drawings (page 746). A very similar netsuke of Daikoku, photographed in Lazarnick (page 966), the signature on the Laz Daikoku is rendered in the same style and leads one to believe that they were carved during a similar period of Shoko’s career.
