A fine 18th century Kobako

18th century kobako, depicting a river meandering in front of a landscape of hills, pine trees and stylised blossoms. The internal tray shows a small footbridge flanked by iris.

The rim-mounted with pewter and the interior of the box in dense nashiji

Provenance – Michael Tomkinson, Oxfordshire, England 1841 – 1921 (see attached photo of Mr Tomkinson’s Japanese gallery that he built at his Oxfordshire home to house his extensive collection)

Publication: A Japanese collection 1898 number 530 

Size: 6.7cm x 6.25cm

Condition – Some very light rubbing to the surface and a small amount of leaching of the pewter rim. No scratches, chips or losses, overall brilliant condition for a kobako of this age.
