A five case inro with Nadeshiko flowers (Dianthus) delicately picked out in various shades of togidashi emerging from strips of muranashiji. The Nadeshiko spreads from the front around the cord runners onto the verso and up onto the top case of the inro forming a continuous design against a roiro background.
Signed Oshin in black lacquer next to a red seal.
Wrangham describes a pupil of Zeshin by the name Oshin in his book “The Index of Inro Artists”. Wrangham details that no inro have yet to be identified from this artist. Given the style of the signature in black lacquer and that this inro dates to the later part of the 19th century it is fair to believe that this could be the first inro identified by Zeshins little-known pupil.
Late 19th Century
