A 19TH century three case inro, decorated with two nightingales amongst a plum blossom tree in Hiramakie and Takamakie. The design spreads over both sides, set on a roiro ground with splashes of mura nashiji. The blossoms are well rendered in red and gold lacquer, highlighted further with the use of aogei. The two nightingales, one in flight, have been delicately rendered with fine feathers.
The design alludes to a poem about a daimyo. The daimyo wanted to cut a branch of a flowering plum tree. The owner declined responding to the request in verse: “If the branch is broken where will the nightingale find a resting place on its return”.
The internal compartments are decorated in nashaiji and fundame
