A good-sized mountain retreat of rectangle form carved from Ebony wood. The retreat nestled amongst pine trees and rocks, with people meandering around the walk ways, winding their way around the mountain spread over three levels. The pavilions and pine trees form detailed open work, carefully crafted to form a compact netsuke that is both pleasing to handle and useable. A flat base with two equal size holes that form the Himotoshi.
Dating to the 19th Century it is possible to tentatively attribute our Netsuke to Chikuyosai Toun, especially when compared to a recent netsuke sold at Bonhams as part of The Julius and Arlette Katchen Collection on the 6 Nov 2018 lot 1.
Provenance – Purchased at Eskenazi, London 22nd June 1987
